The first crisp fall morning has a way of making us rethink our entire wardrobe — after all, it’s officially peak layering season. And while sweaters tend to get most of the autumnal attention, I’d argue that a great jacket is the real seasonal hero. It fends off chilly breezes, pulls together even the most basic jeans-and-tee combo and makes it look like you put serious thought into getting dressed, even when you absolutely did not.
But before you panic-buy yet another black puffer, consider this your sign to branch out. I asked the pros which jackets are poised to have a major moment this autumn. From cool-girl bombers and waist-defining silhouettes to fashion-forward funnel necks, these are the five jacket trends that are about to become the unofficial uniform of stylish women everywhere.
Defined-waist jackets
After seasons of roomy, oversized layers, outerwear is finally getting its curves back. “I think we’ve had boxy jackets for so long that seeing the waist again feels really fresh,” says stylist Yana Echko. “And it doesn’t have to be a very obvious peplum. Even a slightly curved blazer or a jacket that comes in at the waist changes the whole proportion. I love it with wide-leg trousers or a fuller skirt because you still get that volume, just in a different place.”

Seek out curved seams, strategic tailoring or a well-placed belt — these small details will help create definition and show off your figure.
Funnel neck jackets
If there’s one neckline dominating jackets this fall, it’s the funnel neck. Practical but intriguing, they give everything from sporty zip-ups to polished wool coats a little more oomph. “Funnel-neck jackets bring a sculptural edge to everyday dressing,” says stylist Tara West. “Their high, architectural collars frame the face with quiet drama, turning even the most basic jeans-and-tee combination into something deliberate and polished.”
And since the silhouette is so eye-catching, it does all the hard work for you. “It looks strong and modern without needing a lot of accessories or complicated styling,” explains Echko.
Bomber jackets
“Bombers are definitely having another big moment, but I like that they don’t all look sporty anymore. We’re seeing suede, leather, oversized versions, cropped versions and much more elevated fabrics and shapes,” says Echko. Fashion stylist Andie Sobrato is also a fan. “Adding this jacket into the rotation automatically makes any outfit feel cool,” she says.

The secret is all in the styling: “Personally, I love a bomber with something you wouldn’t necessarily expect, like a silk skirt, a dress or tailored trousers. That contrast is what makes it interesting to me,” Echko adds.
Sporty jackets
Remember that lightweight jacket you once reserved for workouts? It’s officially off the sidelines. Stylist Kendra Sharpe says windbreakers and track jackets are back, this time as fashion MVPs. “We’re seeing them paired with skirts, dresses and shorts for a cool-girl sporty feel, styled with sneakers, flats, loafers or boots. The possibilities are endless.” Whether you lean into the contrast or still keep things sporty and wear them over your athleisure, you’ll get a lot of use out of these lightweight layers this fall.
Military-inspired jackets
If your fall wardrobe could use a little more structure, consider enlisting a military-inspired topper. “They sharpen the autumn silhouette with commanding buttons, disciplined tailoring, and a hint of uniformity,” West says. “They give jeans and trousers instant authority, while culottes and chunky boots create a more subversive, fashion-forward contrast.” And if you’re worried about looking like you’re headed to a costume party, you can always reach for a simple olive army jacket. They give off the same utilitarian vibe without being overly literal.
