But before you stock up on yet another basic pullover or turtleneck, I tapped a team of professional stylists to tell us what knits they expect to see everywhere this season.
Their predictions offer plenty of fresh ways to upgrade your sweater weather uniform, including waist-cinching belted cardigans, rollnecks you can practically live in and vibrant colors that make gloomy fall mornings feel a little brighter. Rollnecks
If there’s one sweater taking over closets and social media feeds, it’s the cozy rollneck. It’s a throw-on-and-go hero, serving up plenty of warmth and polish with practically zero effort. “A dramatic rollneck is the ultimate cheat code for instant elegance,” says stylist Allie McKenna. “High, structured necks draw the eye up and create a stunning frame for the face while keeping you cozy. They are incredibly versatile — you can tuck a fine-knit rollneck into a sleek midi skirt for work or let a chunky style sit over dark denim for an elevated weekend aesthetic.”
Belted knits
Why choose between bundling up and showing off your shape when a belted knit lets you do both? This waist-defining style wraps you in warmth while making even the simplest outfit look intentional. “Belted sweaters and wrap styles give you all the warmth of heavy knitwear without losing your shape,” McKenna says. “By cinching at the waist, these styles create a flattering, defined silhouette that elevates traditional cozy wear. They are perfect for transitioning between seasons because they double beautifully as lightweight outerwear on cooler days.”
Quarter zips
Once reserved for golf courses and laid-back weekends, quarter zips are now the cool-girl knit of the moment. “I’ve always been a fan of a quarter-zip sweater, but there’s been a huge resurgence since Matthieu Blazy featured one in his opening look for the Chanel Métiers d’Art show,” stylist Rebecca Kahane Pankow says. “I love that they feel classic and effortless, but still very put together.”

Stylist Zoe Hennessey is also a fan, especially when you layer them. “You could have a thin turtleneck or tee underneath and then another piece on top so you see a little bit of every layer. It feels casual but still very styled.”
Bold colors
After years of beige, gray and navy ruling sweater weather, bolder hues are finally brightening up the forecast. “I’m definitely seeing more color coming into knitwear, but it’s pretty specific: heavy on purple and aqua, but also red, some golden yellow, chocolate and maroon,” says Hennessey. “I haven’t thought of purple as especially chic in a long time, but suddenly I’m excited about it again.” As for styling these bold knits, she recommends layering or draping a brightly colored sweater over your shoulders with an otherwise neutral ensemble. “It’s an easy way to add some color into your outfit,” she tells us.
Polos
If you want to elevate your fall wardrobe without putting in much effort, polo knits are a collar above the rest. This preppy style feels more polished than a basic pullover but is just as easy to throw on, making it a smart choice to wear just about anywhere. “I love a thin polo knit for fall because it’s so versatile. You can layer it over a button-down for a more polished look or simply pair it with denim and heels for dinner,” says Pankow. It always looks like you made an effort — even when you got dressed in five minutes.
