Some wardrobe staples are worth their weight in gold, and a really good black turtleneck is at the top of my list. It’s chic, endlessly versatile and one of those magical pieces that makes getting dressed feel almost too easy. But any turtleneck connoisseur will tell you they’re not all the same. Finding one that’s comfortable, breathable and flattering can be a struggle. As a fashion editor, I’ve tried my fair share of them, but the J.Crew Feather Jersey Turtleneck is the one I go back to season after season. In fact, it’s the most-worn piece in my fall and winter wardrobe.

Not all black turtlenecks are created equal, and this is the one I reach for all season long.
So what sets it apart from the rest? For starters, the breathable, tissue-thin fabric makes it the ultimate layering piece. It’s been in my rotation for years because it manages to do the impossible: provide an extra dose of warmth without adding any extra bulk. I can tuck it into jeans, dress pants and skirts without any awkward bunching or excess fabric pooling around my waist. It lays flat under bottoms, so it almost gives the illusion of wearing a bodysuit. No lumpy layers or constant retucking necessary here.
Of course, the styling potential doesn’t stop at the waistband. While I often wear it on its own, it really earns its keep when the temperatures start to drop. I’ll slip it underneath button-downs, cardigans and pullover sweaters for a little extra insulation without feeling like I’m drowning under layers. And the fact that it’s 100% cotton means I don’t overheat as I layer up. It’s also a surprisingly great base layer under sweatshirts — the neckline adds a polished touch to otherwise casual athleisure outfits.

This is a wardrobe basic I absolutely recommend buying in more than one color. I have my eye on this timeless white style too.
While any turtleneck has ample styling potential, if the neck feels like a medieval torture device, it’s a hard pass from me. Thankfully, this one gets it right. The soft neck folds down comfortably and never feels like it’s choking me. And did I mention that it’s size-inclusive? Yep, it ranges from XXS to 3XL. I order my usual size because I prefer a more fitted silhouette for layering, but if you like a little wiggle room, I’d recommend sizing up.

I’ve had my current black option for over three years and it still looks brand new and fits perfectly every time I take it out of the wash. I also have an older gray version that I love just as much, and I have my eye on white and chocolate brown options this season.
I’ll admit that $50 for an ultra-thin top might initially give you sticker shock. But considering how often I wear mine — and the fact that it’s still going strong after three-plus years — I’d say it’s a worthwhile investment. And if you’re not quite ready to pay full price, I recommend keeping an eye on J.Crew’s website. These shirts regularly go on sale (some hues are currently marked down to $37, though sizes are selling out fast).

Prefer more color? This bright blue shade is unexpected for fall.
