Fashion insiders say these 6 fall trends look expensive without designer prices

Posted on October 22, 2026

Your fall wardrobe deserves to look like a million bucks, even if your bank account would prefer you keep things under $100. Luckily, an expensive-looking outfit doesn’t need to include a designer label — or a price tag that makes you close the tab immediately. Sometimes, all it takes is a richer shade, a more touchable texture or a polished swap for the basics you’ve been wearing on repeat. Suddenly, your usual jeans look like they have plans to go somewhere fancy.

We talked to fashion insiders to get the scoop on six fall trends that help both men and women look luxe for less. Think rich purple hues, supple suede jackets and knit polos that look like they belong on someone with a vacation home. Ahead, shop the trends that satisfy expensive taste at much friendlier prices.

Purple

Every season has its signature color, and this fall, purple takes the throne. “I love that purple is coming back because it is such an easy way to introduce color into a wardrobe that has been mostly neutral for the past few years,” says stylist Zoë Hennessey. Her go-to styling trick? Let your sweater moonlight as an accessory.

“One of my favorite ways to wear it is with a bright purple sweater tied around the shoulders or wrapped around the neck like a scarf, especially over a trench or blazer. It feels unexpected and really chic, and it is such an easy pop of color without changing the whole outfit.” And there’s no need for a royal budget, she adds. “This absolutely does not need to be an expensive sweater, especially if you are mostly using it as an accent piece.”

Quarter zips

Once a country-club staple, a quarter zip now feels just as at home beyond the clubhouse. With a stand-up collar and an adjustable neckline, it brings a polished feel to everyday outfits — no membership required. “Quarter and half zips are everywhere right now,” says Hennessey, adding that “there is really no need to buy an expensive one!” Even the most budget-friendly versions look a little more put-together than your average sweater. “They feel sporty but still polished, and they look great layered over a tee or turtleneck.”

Stylist Rebecca Kahane Pankow is equally sold. “I love that they feel classic and effortless, but still very put together,” she says. Zip yours up when the temperature dips, or leave it open to let a favorite top peek through.

Dark denim

Dark wash denim can make even a bargain pair of jeans look like a splurge. The trick is to keep things simple. Skip distressing, whiskering and heavy fading, and focus on a pair that fits you well. A little attention to the hem helps too — getting the length right can make a budget find feel tailored for you.

“Dark, clean denim is one of the most versatile pieces you can own,” says personal stylist and color specialist Catherine Wuthrich. “Pair it with a blazer, refined knit or well-cut overshirt and finish with a classic loafer or leather shoe for an easy, elevated look.”

Suede coats

There’s a good reason suede outerwear comes back into style every year as soon as the temperatures start to cool down. That soft, rich texture delivers instant luxury — but your bank account doesn’t have to feel the chill. Personal stylist Tara West suggests getting the same look with faux suede. “A faux-suede version adds rich texture and depth that make an outfit feel expensive. Look for a soft, matte finish, minimal hardware and a flattering silhouette.”

“Just make sure you purchase good quality faux suede, which is generally available at low prices in a color that fits your tastes,” says stylist Derek Warburton. “It’s also easy to pair with knitwear, wool, leather and other rustic textures.” We love options in chocolate brown, warm caramel or and other autumnal shades that play nicely with the fall clothes you already love.

Knit polos

A polo knit has the quiet confidence of something with a much higher price tag. Its neat collar and fine texture make even a simple jeans-and-sweater outfit feel a little more posh. Look for a smooth finish, subtle buttons and a fit that skims rather than clings — the small details that make an affordable find look like a very good investment.

“I love a thin polo knit for fall because it’s so versatile. You can layer it over a button-down for a more polished look, or simply pair it with denim and heels for dinner,” says Pankow. Go classic with navy or black, or choose a rich brown for a dressier autumnal feel.

Belts

A great belt can make your outfit look more expensive without doing damage to your shopping budget, say two of our fashion experts. “A belt finishes an outfit and instantly elevates any look,” says West. Her shopping checklist: a smooth leather finish, clean stitching and understated hardware. “These details create a luxe look and can be purchased at lower price points.”

Hennessey is equally enthusiastic. “Belts are huge right now, and this is one trend where I really don’t think you need to spend designer money,” she says. And you can get creative with what counts as a belt. “I also love the idea of using a vintage silk sash or scarf as a belt. I recently saw a man wearing a turquoise scarf tied around his waist with white pants and a black top, and it looked so expensive. He quietly told me it was from Amazon! Sometimes it really is the styling that makes something look luxe.”
